First wave competition commences in small surf conditions

Written by Editor on . Posted in News

Today marks the first day of the wave discipline at the Essaouira Kiteboard World Cup 2010. All the riders and crew gathered at the surf spot near 10:00am this morning. The wind slowly started to pick up in strength, but there were very small waves with short sets.

The PKRA crew decided to let the riders vote and make a decision whether or not they would run the wave event or not due to the extremely poor wave conditions. Some of the riders voted no, while the majority voted in favor of holding the wave competition despite the nearly less than suitable wave conditions. Near 11:00am the judges station was in place and the discipline got underway.

Most of the Brazilian competitor made their way quickly to the top of the ladder. Sebastian Garat (RRD, FRA) defeated Moroccan rider Yassine Boucheta in the 3rd round however, Mitu Monteiro (F-One, ) eliminated Garat in the 4th round. Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED) defeated all contenders that he was up against, except Monteiro defeated Langeree in the 5th round. Brazilian rider Ian Glaza (Mormaii, BRA) was cutting pretty hard today which led him all the way to the winners final against Mitu Monteiro (F-One, ). Guilly Brandao (Mormaii, BRA) had a successful winning streak until he was up against Dutch rider Youri Zoon (Slingshot, NED). Zoon defeated Brandao in a 3-0-judge decision.

In the women’s division

The wave results will be announced tomorrow after the remainder of the double eliminations are completed.

Skipper’s meeting is scheduled for 11:00am tomorrow morning. The Essaouira Kiteboard World Cup 2010 is sponsored in part by L’Association Essaouira Mogador, Province d’Essaouira, L’Association Marocaine de Kitsurf, kitemorocco.com, ONMT, Sprite SAEMOG and the Atlas Hotel Essaouira.
